"There was no wrongdoing on my part", Israel said Friday in response to DeSantis' decision.

"This is an enormous honor and privilege to be appointed Sheriff of Broward County", said newly appointed Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony.

DeSantis cited Israel's "incompetence" and said he "demonstrated a pattern of poor leadership" after the Fort Lauderdale International Airport shooting in 2017 and the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018.

"Sheriff Israel has repeatedly failed and has demonstrated a pattern of poor leadership", the governor said, citing shootings at Fort Lauderdale International Airport in 2017 and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018.

Another major change DeSantis included in his order puts a priority on the construction of a reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee to help filter agricultural runoff.

Under Florida law, DeSantis has the right to suspend election officials accused of "criminal activity, misfeasance, incompetence or neglect of duty", according to ABC News.

Responding to the commission report last month, Israel said that all Broward sheriff's deputies completed an additional eight hours of active-shooter training, that the department has created a threat assessment unit and that it has enacted other reforms. Tony, a Democrat like Israel, will fill the remainder of Israel's term, unless the ousted sheriff is successful in fighting his suspension.

"Citizens are going to be in the position of having to hold Governor DeSantis accountable to his promises", said Moncrief. Rick Scott in February, urging him to suspend Israel for "incompetence and neglect of duty".

A state commission investigating the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School recently concluded Israel's changes to the department's active shooter policy may have contributed to some deputies' inaction during the shooting.

Israel's removal from the helm of the agency has been expected since the new governor was sworn in.

Florida's governor on Friday, January 11, suspended the sheriff who oversaw the response to last year's Parkland school shooting over failings in his handling of the massacre.

"I respectfully decline", said Brandon Tucker, the Vice Chair of the SFWMD governing board.

"He has been one of the very few sheriffs whose had a strong presence in the black community", said Kelly Davis, a radio DJ known as Big Man Kelly.

They said the policy as written provided deputy's discretion on whether to confront the shooter.

"I intend to vigorously fight this unjustified suspension both in court and before the Florida Senate", Israel said, adding that no one was suspended after the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando that left 49 people dead in 2016.
