Spacey did not appear to enter a plea during the court appearance. During a nine-minute hearing, Spacey was ordered to stay away from and have no contact with the alleged victim or his family.

The actor's legal team claims, however, that they believe text messages from the alleged victim and his girlfriend could prove that Spacey did not assault the man, but rather that the interaction was consensual.

Another hearing is set for March 4.

The judge ruled Spacey did not have to appear at the hearing, but he needed to be available by phone. Jackson said the data was "likely exculpatory".

Looking exhausted, Spacey agreed not to have contact with his alleged victim and nodded his head slightly when he was ordered to stand before the judge.

The Nantucket allegations were first raised in 2017 by former Boston television journalist Heather Unruh, who told reporters Spacey groped her teenage son.

The 18-year-old's girlfriend said she did get a Snapchat video, but could only say that it showed a hand touching the front of her boyfriend's trousers.

In addition to the Nantucket case, two other investigations are underway in Los Angeles and London, where Spacey served as artistic director of the prestigious Old Vic theater from 2004 to 2015.

Spacey's lawyers have tried to poke holes in the case, noting that the teenager didn't immediately report the allegations and that authorities have no witnesses to the actual groping.

Spacey was considered one of the finest actors of his generation, but his career nosedived following allegations of sexual misconduct by more than a dozen men in the United States and Britain.

If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.

The alleged victim is the son of former television news presenter Heather Unruh, who spoke publicly about the incident past year.

"I can promise you this", Spacey said, "If I didn't pay the price for the things we both know I did do, I'm certainly not going to pay the price for the things I didn't do".

After meeting the actor and telling him he was 23 years old - the legal drinking age is 21 in MA - he said he started drinking first beer and then whiskey at Spacey's urging.
