Los Angeles Sparks hire Derek Fisher as head coach

Back in 2016, the New York Knicks fired former National Basketball Association player Derek Fisher following a 23-31 start to the season after going 17-65 in Fisher's first season in 2014-15.

Fisher previously coached the NBA's New York Knicks. Brian Agler resigned as the team's head coach last week, leaving a vacancy that will be filled by the former National Basketball Association player and head coach.

Fisher played in the National Basketball Association for 18 seasons and helped the Los Angeles Lakers win five titles. The Knicks were a combined 40-96 with Fisher as head coach.

But that was back in 2016, and it's been almost three years since Fisher has gotten the chance to coach. He is the winningest coach in WNBA history.

"Our ownership group is excited to welcome Derek to the Sparks family", Sparks Managing Director and Governor Eric Holoman said.

The Sparks are expected to announce the move Friday. After many successful years as one of the team atop the WNBA, the Sparks ended last season with a second-round playoff exit which doesn't meet the standards of a franchise used to competing for conference and league titles.

"Derek is a champion and proven leader on and off the court", Sparks executive vice president and general manager Penny Toler said.
