Sandra Oh, Andy Samberg named as Golden Globe hosts

A slew of stars, including the film's own Danai Gurira, announced on Thursday the nominations for the 76th annual ceremony to be held in January in Beverly Hills, California. Category-based drama is nearly always an issue with this awards show, since studios are notorious for jockeying between competitions that sort-of fit (even sometimes making major stretches) while campaigning for projects that can arguably slide into different boxes.

Sandra and Andy are the ideal choices to host this world-class event. "It's sure to be another unforgettable fun-filled night".

Oh is best known for her former role in the long-running television hospital drama Grey's Anatomy, and is now starring in BBC America's acclaimed murder-mystery Killing Eve.

When it comes to television the HFPA has tended to favour the new, but many were surprised to see "Atlanta" left off the list for best television series, musical or comedy, which included such unexpected choices as "Kidding" and "The Kominsky Method". Oh is also co-hosting the Golden Globes - with Andy Samberg of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" - so you can safely predict how that category is going to go. (McQueen's previous film, 12 Years a Slave, won the Globes' top honor.) The same goes for Saoirse Ronan's well-reviewed Mary Queen of Scots and the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On the Basis of Sex (in which Felicity Jones is very, very good!).

While the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a collection of 88 mostly lesser-known freelance film journalists, is known for its quirkier selections and categorizations ("Get Out" a year ago slotted in as a comedy), few saw the resounding success of "Vice" coming.

He was the 2015 Emmy Awards host, while Oh is a newcomer to handling emcee duties for a major ceremony.

The Golden Globes feature separate awards for dramas and musicals/comedies - meaning more nominations, and a chance for Oscar voters to consider a wider range of performances before they get their ballots.

Samberg and Oh did a test run as co-presenters at the Primetime Emmy Awards in September, which aired on NBC.

The HFPA changed the title of the honorary position past year from Miss Golden Globe to Golden Globe Ambassador, seeking to make the position more gender-neutral.

Still, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association didn't make too many egregious errors. Back in 2016, Deadpool earned a nomination in the Best Musical or Comedy category. NBC picked it up a few days later.
