One of the key marketing features most buyers look out for on a new smartphone is usually the camera prowess of the model.

The Snapdragon 855 announced by Qualcomm and the existing Snapdragon X50 LTE modem are all that Android smartphones would need to crank out 5G-ready smartphones.

Qualcomm is betting big that 5G will jump start the saturated smartphone market. Notably it will use a millimeter wave network and should deliver some fast speeds. Verizon's 5G service for smartphones will only begin rolling out in "early 2019".

"5G is going to be about more than just a network", said David Christopher, President of AT&T Mobility and Entertainment. Qualcomm announced Elite Gaming. Although carriers in the United States and overseas are planning to light up their first commercial 5G coverage in 2019, it'll be some time before anywhere close to a significant percentage of the population have access to a 5G signal. Unfortunately, not much else is known now about the device.

Whatever the case, it's as official as it gets, considering OnePlus made the announcement at Qualcomm's ongoing tech conference.

Qualcomm claims that 18 device makers signed up to use its chips in 5G devices next year. Aside from Samsung getting into bed with two hardcore rivals, Motorola is working with Verizon for its own device, while LG has plans to launch its own 5G compatible device on Sprint's network, also for the first half of 2019. Meanwhile, support for HEIF images - which can store multiple versions of shots, depth maps, and more in a single file - should both maximize on-device storage and make it easier to share those images. OnePlus will be the first to release a 5G phone on United Kingdom operator EE.

Not many details have been given yet, partly because Qualcomm is downplaying things such as CPU and GPU performance in favour of the overall experience. A Bloomberg report this week said that Apple will hold off on launching an iPhone on the ultra-fast 5G network until 2020 at the earliest. Not surprising at all was Apple's logo missing from the Qualcomm's slide of partners. Qualcomm is believed to have a technology lead on Intel in 5G - though it's unclear how much.
