Vice President Mike Pence: 'President Bush served his country'


Trump, who was not in the Capitol, wrote on Twitter that he was "looking forward to being with the Bush Family to pay my respects to President George H.W. Bush" at Wednesday's funeral. One of 41's last wishes was for Sully to continue to serve.

As the nation mourned the death of former president George H.W. Bush over the weekend, his beloved service dog was by his side to the end.

Bush is the 11th president to lie in state at the Capitol and among 31 people to have been given the honor. "And he exemplified what it truly means to be a leader", said Carper.

He will lie in state in the Capitol for public visitation through Wednesday.

Ferried by motorcade to the Capitol along streets bathed in the auburn afternoon sun, the president ended his journey along Constitution Avenue, adorned with US and D.C. flags flying from lamp posts.

Trump had a complicated relationship with the late president. And flanked by statues of his fellow champions whom he joined in making that story possible.

Former President George H.W. Bush, who has been lauded as a man of decency and civility, has a complicated legacy when it comes to race.

On Wednesday a memorial service for friends and family members will be held at Washington National Cathedral.

His death also reduces membership in the ex-presidents' club to four: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

A humble hero of World War II, Bush was just 20 when he survived being shot down during a bombing run over a Japanese island.

Randy Bates, a 48-year-old Idaho resident, chose to pay his respects because he was in town for work.

"He kept us flying high and challenged us to fly higher still, and he did it with modesty and kindness that would've been surprising in someone one-tenth as tough and accomplished as he was", McConnell said.

Even witnessing the motorcade was enough for some.
