Urban Meyer "Retires" At Ohio State

One of Ohio State's biggest commitments in the 2019 class is ESPN 300 wide receiver Garrett Wilson, the 13th-ranked prospect overall out of Texas, who said that Day's openness and coaching style were things that drew him to the Buckeyes.

Ohio State's season had five straight wins, including a rout of archrival MI that gave the Buckeyes another division title and a win over Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship.

When Day was named interim head coach in September, he received daily text messages from his coaching mentor Chip Kelly, whom he played for at New Hampshire and coached with in San Francisco and Philadelphia.

It started with him being placed on administrative leave back in July after reports surfaced that he was aware of spousal abuse allegations involving Zach Smith, an assistant coach on his staff, a claim he vehemently denied but eventually led to a three-game suspension by the university.

Outside of Alabama and Clemson, no other program has a better winning percentage than Ohio State since 2013.

The team alternated expected blowout wins with puzzling play that included a pair of one-point wins (Penn State, Maryland) and a closer-than-expected win over a struggling Nebraska team.

His contract was extended in April by two years through 2022, increasing Meyer's salary to $7.6 million in 2018 with annual 6 percent raises.

Meyer would eventually admit publicly to having chronic debilitating headaches caused by an arachnoid cyst that he had surgery on back in 2014.

He told the Herald-Leader's Ben Roberts last summer, "A lot of people probably don't care for Urban Meyer". He dealt with some severe head pain during a 2018 game against Indiana. The college football world.

Meyer also said that he could not adapt to a "CEO" type style with a more hands-off approach if he wanted to coach differently to extend his career.

"At the end of the day, I'm very convinced that you're going to be judged on how you are as a husband and as a father and not on how many bowl games we won", Meyer said at a campus news conference. That was his reason for resigning at Florida in 2010.
