The Elton John themed John Lewis christmas advert has caused quite a frenzy today, but it has already become the subject of a few cheeky social media digs from other companies.

This year's John Lewis Christmas advert is no exception, as it features one very famous face and the gift that changed his life - yes, we're talking Elton John and a piano.

But of course, not everyone is happy about it.

What is the John Lewis 2018 Christmas advert about?

The move comes ahead of John Lewis' much-anticipated Christmas campaign, which is reported to contain a starring role for the musician.

Several users also poked fun at the advert being released amidst the final Brexit negotiations and multiple cabinet members resigning. That little boy just happens to be Elton John.

The big budget movie will star Taron Egerton as John, and will cover John's prolific rise to fame.

The John Lewis Christmas ad description is "This year's story is about the power of a gift".

Instead, the ad reverses the order of events and comes to focus on the moment young Elton first sat down to play his grandmother's piano.

Fans of the new John Lewis ad included former MP and Strictly Come Dancing star Ed Balls, who said it was "totally brilliant", and TV presenter Susanna Reid who responded: "Absolutely love it".

Viewers will be given an insight into Elton's childhood as the advert goes back in time and references the important and iconic stages in the performer's life. A portion of Elton John's undisclosed fee has been donated to the Elton John Charitable Trust.

A spokesperson from John Lewis told Express.co.uk: "So this Christmas, we will be selling pianos, so you can buy the gift".

"Fantasy bio-pic" Rocketman, starring Taron Egerton as Elton John, hits Kiwi cinemas in May, 2019.

It features John as a child receiving a piano as a Christmas present.
