Welbeck injured as Arsenal reach Europa knock-out phase

Arsenal winger, Alex Iwobi, rues the inability of the Gunners to convert their chances in Thursday night's Europa League clash against Portuguese side, Sporting Lisbon at the Emirates Stadium, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The forward landed badly after challenging for a header and needed to be stretched off the pitch after some lengthy treatment, which included him requiring oxygen.

The injury casts Welbeck's club future into further doubt, with the 27-year-old out of contract at the end of the season.

Danny Welbeck scored the 77th-minute victor, which gave Arsenal sole possession of first place in Group E. The Gunners haven't lost in their last 14 matches and have found their form under manager Unai Emery, a three-time victor of the Europa League with Sevilla.

But it was Welbeck's injury just before the half hour mark that was the main talking point from a largely forgettable Emirates Stadium encounter. A good lad and a good friend.

He was stretchered off the pitch, and the scenes were rather distressing for the Arsenal players, particularly the youngsters. "He can come back strong".

"His injury is also [bad] for the mentality of the players because they looked and saw it is a big injury, but when you are playing football and competitive matches it can happen".

Petr Cech: "Danny's looked like a serious injury which is not nice to see and our thoughts are with him and also Stephan [Lichtsteiner]". He broke something in his ankle and it's a different injury than another.

Teammates have offered support as the former Manchester United player faces his third long injury layoff since 2015.
