Top U.S. and Canadian trade negotiators were set for a second day of talks on Thursday over a revised North American Free Trade Agreement after their subordinates worked late into the night to flesh out opportunities for a compromise deal.
Canada's foreign minister is to be in Saskatoon on Wednesday to update her fellow caucus members on the ongoing negotiations. A deal would see Canada join a preliminary trade agreement the Trump administration struck last month with Mexico.
Solemn cross-border remembrances slammed headlong into the present-day fight over free trade Tuesday as Canada and the USA resumed their protracted effort to rescue NAFTA on the 17th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in Washington and New York City.
At the White House, Trump told reporters Canada wanted a deal "very much" and that talks were "coming along well".
"Maybe that helps us all put into perspective the negotiations that we're having and put into historical significance the relationship between Canada and the United States", Freeland said.
Free Trade Agreement, said Tuesday he expects a NAFTA deal can be reached.
Welles Orr, who was assistant US trade representative for congressional affairs in the George H.W. Bush administration, said the prospects appear good for a deal with Canada in coming weeks, although a new NAFTA or its replacement would likely not get through Congress until next year at the soonest.
Yet, he stressed that "if we sign the deal it'll be. for Canada and Canadians".More news: Tobacco Stocks to Gain on FDA E-Cig Crackdown
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said he expected Canada to also scrap a two-year-old pricing agreement that has restricted U.S. exports of ultra-filtered milk used to make dairy products.
Data released on Wednesday showed the US trade deficit hit a five-month high of $50 billion. Under U.S. trade negotiating laws, a text for that agreement is due by October 1. President Donald Trump, in a story that appeared in Automotive News Canada, said Friday that while "I don't want to do anything bad to Canada".
"I think it is good for him in the short term.
It can't be renamed something or called something else", Perdue said when asked about dairy concessions needed to reach a NAFTA deal, referring to a new milk class created a year ago by Canada to price milk ingredients such as protein concentrates, skim milk and whole milk powder.
"At the end of the day, we're neighbors", Freeland said.
"We're just going to stay working constructively to get to that win, win, win that we know is there".
"And the word that continues to block the deal is m-i-l-k, OK?", Kudlow said during an appearance last week on "Varney & Co.", a Fox Business Network show. "He's railed against this thing (NAFTA) and they've been at the negotiating table for now over a year. They're really hammering this out", said Orr, who is now senior worldwide trade adviser for a Washington law firm.
