Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson is now officially facing Republican Gov. Rick Scott in Florida's US Senate race, a contest that has already cost the two campaigns and outside groups more than $50 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

"For me, I think she's probably the gal that could take us on to the next generation of warriors that have been great senators for our state: Barry Goldwater, John McCain and hopefully Martha McSally", said Roth.

This raises the stakes in Ducey's selection of a replacement for John McCain.

Also running for the Senate nomination is former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a controversial immigration hardliner.

Graham, who was considered a centrist, was viewed as a more attractive general election candidate in the purple state.

The victor of the GOP primary is likely to face Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, who faces only token primary opposition.

Flake did not formally endorse McSally in the GOP primary in Arizona, where three candidates vied for the chance to replace him in the Senate. But 2018 would be a disastrous year for the GOP to end the streak, with partisan control of the Senate likely to hang in the balance.

The line, which drew wild applause from her supporters, is a reference to the searing campaign ad McSally launched against Sinema last week.

McCain's seat will be filled by Republican Gov. Doug Ducey in an appointment made after the senator's funeral; there will then be a special election on the 2020 ballot to fill the remainder of McCain's term.

After President Donald Trump's repeated squabbles with Arizona Sen.

In Florida's 16th and 18th districts, lawyer David Shapiro and former Obama administration official Lauren Baer won their Democratic primaries to face incumbent Republicans in districts Trump won in 2016 but that Democrats hope will become competitive this year.

Democrats, though, are hopeful of capturing one of Arizona's Senate seats for the first time in almost a quarter century, saying the GOP is wounded after a divisive primary that saw the party's conservatives split between Mr. Arpaio and Ms. Ward.

"What makes this race unique is that in nearly every criteria, they're equally qualified in terms of money and campaign experience", she said. On the Republican side, the endorsement from the Miami Herald could propel former Doral councilwoman Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera, who claims to have been abducted by aliens, to a stronger-than expected finish as she and several other Republicans try to catch front-runner Maria Elvira Salazar, a former TV reporter. They recruited former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham, the daughter of a popular former governor and U.S. senator, who had won support from business in the past.

On the Republican side, Trump got his man, Republican congressman Ron DeSantis, who beat out the establishment favorite, state Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam.

Businessman Kevin Stitt won the Republican nomination for governor in Oklahoma in a primary runoff race against the former Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett. Stitt criticized his opponent as insufficiently supportive of Trump.

Sinema, a former Green Party member, has undergone her own political shift toward the middle over the years, joining the "Blue Dog Coalition" of moderate Democrats after winning her seat in 2012 and voting against Democrat Nancy Pelosi's re-election as minority leader in 2016.
