'Time has come' to create US Space Force, sixth military branch: Pence

The Trump administration plans to establish a Department of the Space Force - a sixth independent branch of the USA military - by 2020, Vice President Mike Pence announced on Thursday. This force will draw from across the military to provide space expertise in times of crisis and conflict, Pence said. "The time has come to establish the United States Space Force. While our adversaries have been busy weaponizing space too often we have bureaucratized it and over time our ability to adapt to new and emerging threats has been stifled by needless layers of red tape", Pence said. He worries that creating an all-new branch will just create more bureaucracy, Brumfiel reports.

He said the countries "have been conducting highly sophisticated on-orbit activities that could enable them to manoeuvre their satellites into close proximity of ours, posing unprecedented new dangers to our space systems". "We particularly appreciate Deputy Secretary Shanahan's leadership on these issues and look forward to the establishment of a much-needed independent Space Force, as called for by President Trump".

President Donald Trump is already campaigning on his proposed new Space Force.

The top House Republican and Democrat on an Armed Services Committee panel on strategic forces applauded the plan.

On Thursday, Mattis said "space is one of our vital national interests" and is "no longer a new domain".

"This report is a step in a multi-year process that we think will result in a safer, stronger America", they said.

Trump is obviously a fan of the new branch, tweeting "Space Force all the way!" as Pence spoke. We are in complete alignment with the president's concern about protecting our assets in space that contribute to our security, to our economy.

The Pentagon will hire space experts to create the new force which will be headed by a four-star general and be operational by 2020.

Former Secretary of the Air Force, Deborah Lee James says it is a bad idea.

"This is so stupid", he added.

"Space Force is not your solution", she said.

THE GOAL. According to Pence, "It is not enough to have an American presence in space".

In every domain, America will always seek peace, the vice president said. As for now, we can only hope these memes will deter Space Force from becoming an actual thing.

The vast U.S. military divides the globe into various commands, such as Central Command in the Middle East or Indo-Pacific Command in Asia, and so a new Space Command would be on an equal footing with these.

In a letter to a United States congressman, he said he did "not wish to add a separate service that would likely present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations", adding it would create extra bureaucracy and cost.
