OpenAI’s Bots Just Beat Professional DotA 2 Players

While OpenAI's defeat of some of Dota 2's cream of the crop players is decidedly impressive, what's definitely more noteworthy is the unprecedented advancement of artificial intelligence itself. The AI bot has once again smashed the semi-professional Dota 2 players which are ranked in the 99.95 percentile in the world.

OpenAI's initiatives with Dota 2 began in March past year. They are so well-coordinated and focused on teamwork that it was almost impossible for any of the human players to single a bot out. "You have imperfect information, you have team work, you have these exponential combinations of different heroes and items, and you have to be able to deal with all of that". Even so, the bots managing to beat a team of human pros is remarkable, and it will be even more remarkable if the bots manage to make any progress at Valve's official International DOTA 2 Tournament, which is where OpenAI will be taking them next. The second match saw the pro team take out one of OpenAI's towers, but the AI group won regardless. At a recent battle between the human players and the bot, the team of human players managed to win just one game from the artificially intelligent bot, Cnet reported. OpenAI co-founder and CTO Greg Brockman has previously described it as - if you assume that it takes a human at least 12,000 hours to become a professional at the game, OpenAI's systems essentially play 100 human lifetimes of experience every day to train.

OpenAI Five's latest win against its most formidable adversaries yet ultimately demonstrates the huge progress the bots have made over the past few months. Last month, the company released footage of a robotic arm manipulating a cube with uncanny dexterity that was trained using reinforcement learning algorithm as the OpenAI Five. OpenAI had the capacity to predict its chance of winning during each stage of the game, as well as during character selection.

For those who don't know, OpenAI is a non-profit organization founded by Elon Musk.
