NYS Health Department Warns of Measles Exposure in Chemung County

One confirmed case of measles has been reported in San Luis Obispo County.

The state Department of Health is warning people after an individual with measles visited two stores in Pennsylvania and may have exposed others to the disease.

Old Country Buffet, 821 Country Route 64, Elmira, NY on April 30th between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Secretary of Health Dr. Levine says measles can be highly contagious, but the risk of catching it is minimal if you have been properly immunized.

Museum at the Watchtower World Headquarters, 1 King Drive in Tuxedo Park, between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. on April 27.

"The risk of developing measles is low for people who have been vaccinated or are immune". However, if a person is infected with measles, the symptoms will be far less severe if the person is vaccinated.

Sheraton Niagara Falls, 300 3rd Street, Niagara Falls, Niagara County, from 5:30 p.m. April 30 to 9:30 a.m.

Measles symptoms can include high fever of 101°F and above, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash that starts at the hairline and travels downward to the rest of the body. Individuals should receive two doses of MMR vaccine to be fully protected. Two or three days after symptoms begin, tiny white spots may appear inside the mouth.

The Department of Health recommends that people contact health care professionals prior to going in for care as a safety precaution.

Exit 5 on Interstate 390 in Dansville, Livingston County, between 9:30 a.m. and noon on May 2. That will help prevent others at those facilities from being exposed to the illness.

People are considered infectious from four days before to four days after the rash appears. Since August 1990, college students have also been required to demonstrate immunity against measles.
