On World Malaria Day, Mamata reiterates her commitment to fight disease


It was in May 2007 that the 60th session of the World Health Assembly chose to establish the World Malaria Day.

This year's theme is Ready to beat malaria.

Most of those cases were reported in Africa.

Vietnam has adopted a national strategy on malaria prevention and elimination for the 2011 - 2020 period with a vision towards 2030. Malaria in pregnancy contributes significantly to deaths of mothers and young children, with an estimated tally of at least 10,000 women and 200,000 infants under one year old.

"Resistance to treatment presents the biggest threat to the incredible progress that has been made in the fight against malaria in the past 20 years".

Although malaria is a preventable disease, poor sanitary conditions and the lack of preventive vaccination keep it as a scourge in several third world countries, especially in Africa.

Dr Baseer Khan said the efforts against malaria control need further to be enhanced with strong political commitment, financial resources and improved surveillance through new and improved tools.

She said: "We believe that with collective efforts of everyone - worldwide partners, government at all levels, business sectors, NGOs, community stakeholders and direct beneficiaries, we are ready to beat Malaria".

He observed that with continued partnership in eliminating malaria, the fight against the disease will be won.

She said that LAPO activities for malaria prevention were aimed at reducing the social and economic burdens of malaria on individuals and the society.

Kezia Malm, Manager of the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP), said Ghana was selected for the trial because of its high malaria burden and well-functioning malaria and immunization programs.

She also used the occasion to recognize the impact of the government and global partners for their many supports in combating malaria in Liberia.

The Limpopo Department of Health is encouraging communities and health care providers to be aware of malaria and not to delay seeking treatment and testing for malaria.

Beating malaria is critical to ending poverty, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of ending poverty in all its forms.

In early-stage clinical trials, one experimental malaria vaccine candidate called PfSPZ elicited high levels of protection in malaria-naïve adults in the USA and Europe against controlled human malaria infection with the same parasite strain occurring within a few months of immunization, and moderate levels of protection persisted up to one year after immunization.

NAN reports that LAPO sensitized the community members on how to keep their environment clean in order to curb the spread of Malaria.

Malaria can be prevented by mosquito control measures like preventing water stagnation and spraying insecticides in mosquito breeding sites Use of mosquito nets, mosquito repellant creams and wearing fully covered clothes are simple steps but effective steps for controlling malaria.
