Lalu Yadav convicted in fourth Fodder Scam case


The verdict, scheduled on March 15, was deferred four times. Since then, he has been at Birsa Munda jail in Ranchi. Mishra was, however, present in the court. He fell sick in the jail and was admitted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) on Saturday. This is the fourth case relating to the fodder scam, for the fraudulent withdrawal of ₹3.13 crore from the Dumka treasury.

According to a report in The Hindu, 19 persons have been found guilty, while 12 have been acquitted.

The quantum of sentence against Lalu Yadav, 69, and other convicts in the case is likely to be pronounced on Wednesday. The court, however, acquitted Jagannath Mishra in the case.

On January 24, a Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court here handed over five-year jail term to Lalu in a fodder scam case.

The court, however, acquitted former chief minister Dr Jagannath Mishra and two retired IAS officers - Mahesh Prasad and Beck Julius.

In December the same year Lalu Prasad was convicted in the second fodder scam case, which pertained to fraudulent withdrawal of money amounting to over Rs89 lakh from Deoghar treasury between 1991 and 1994 when he was the chief minister and also handled the finance portfolio.

Yadav, who is now in Ranchi jail, can not contest elections or hold public offices due to his conviction in different cases relating to scam.

Yadav was the former chief minister of India's eastern state of Bihar and has also served as minister of Indian railways.

RJD Chief Yadav has been previously convicted in other fodder scam cases and he is now serving a jail sentence. So what exactly is the whole fodder scam and why has Lalu Prasad Yadav got in this legal trouble? The court found him guilty in the embezzlement of Rs 33.67 crore from Chaibasa district treasury during 1992-93.
