San Angelo not spared from widespread flu cases across Texas

There were also 23 influenza outbreaks reported at long-term care facilities for the week ending January 6, more than have been reported for any week of the last two flu seasons.

"Every week shows a little more of an increase of influenza across the state", Dr. William Berg, director of the Peninsula Health District, said.

Dr. Luis Garcia from Family First Health on South George Street said he's seen about 10 or 15 flu cases in York City since October.

Seventy percent of the confirmed cases were diagnosed in November and December, the district said.

"I got my husband sick, he ended up in the hospital for 2 days", she said.

"It's really important that as many eligible people as possible get their jab which is the best way to protect everyone from flu".

"It still helps", Berg said.

With the news of widespread flu activity across Texas, patients have had mild difficulty locating flu clinics.

Dr. Christopher Perkins, with DCHHS, said older adults and individuals with chronic health conditions, pregnant women, young children and infants are the most vulnerable to the flu.

The free flu shots are available without an appointment. Influenza B can also affect older people and is the strain that most often infects children.

"The efficacy of the flu vaccine can only be determined at the end of a season", said Haggie.

The spread of flu can be reduced if people stay home while sick, cover their coughs or sneezes, wash hands and avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.

The flu virus has been at a near-epidemic level in the Birmingham area as doctor's offices and hospitals are overrun with patients. "Our top goal is to treat all patients in a safe and appropriate manner, and our teams are doing their best to minimize any impact on our patients", said UNC Health Care/UNC REX Healthcare spokesperson Alan Wolf.
