Tom Savage exits after scary moment against 49ers

Jimmy Garoppolo threw for a career-high 334 yards and a touchdown to help the San Francisco 49ers to their second straight win, 26-16, over the Houston Texans on Sunday. Fulback Kyle Juszczyk caught passes of 29 and 31 yards to set up the 49ers for the first touchdown in six quarters of Garoppolo as a starter. However, at the 2:32 mark of the second quarter, backup T.J. Yates replaced Savage behind center, with Savage seen on the sideline lobbying to return to the field yet again. The 49ers mostly took Hopkins away after that, however, and the offense stalled.

Next up for Garoppolo are the Houston Texans, who have lost their past two games.

He, Tank Carradine, Solomon Thomas, Cassius Marsh and Elvis Dumervil will play defensive end today.

According to reports on the scene, Savage then was taken into the medical tent during the possession change while the Texans were on defense.

Savage tried repeatedly to enter the game on the next series. The Texans' quarterback situation was never going to be good after Deshaun Watson went down with an injury.

Savage, who's now suffered significant injuries in each of his four National Football League seasons, was checked by Texans team doctors on the sideline, but reentered the game on the following series. The 49ers lead the Texans 13-9 at halftime.
