Tennessee hires Jeremy Pruitt to be Vols 26th head football coach

It's also worth noting that teams will have a tenth assistant beginning next year. Tennessee went 4-8 this season and set a school record for losses. After that, he served as the defensive coordinator at Florida State for one season, and spent two seasons as Georgia's defensive coordinator before returning to Alabama in 2016.

Pruitt replaces Butch Jones, who was sacked November 12 after going 34-27 overall and 14-24 in Southeastern Conference competition in five seasons.

Pruitt is the 26th head coach in Tennessee football history.

While at Florida State, his defense was first in the nation in scoring, allowing just 10.7 points per game.

The search for Tennessee's coach finally ended Thursday, when new athletic director Phillip Fulmer offered Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt the position.

Everything, if you believe high school coaching legend Rush Propst, who's now coaching one of the nation's best outside linebacker prospects in J.J. Peterson at Colquitt County (Ga.) High School. He started his collegiate career at Middle Tennessee before transferring to Alabama as a defensive back in 1995. He left to become Florida State's defensive coordinator in 2013 and won a title in his one year with the Seminoles.

The 43-year-old is widely recognized as an excellent recruiter and was a Broyles Award finalist in 2016.

He has also had success on the recruiting trail, bringing in 11 five-star recruits (six as the primary recruiter) and 28 four-star recruits (15 as primary). He played at Alabama from 2008-12 (which means Pruitt coached him).

Tennessee's coaching search then ranged from Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, Duke's David Cutcliffe, Purdue's Jeff Brohm, North Carolina State's Dave Doeren and Washington State's Mike Leach until athletic director John Currie was sacked last week.

We've seen these kind of hires work out greatly for some, including defending national champion Clemson with Dabo Swinney, but fail other times.

The school hired Fulmer to take Currie's place on Friday.

Pruitt was also a recent finalist for the Mississippi State head coaching position, but the Bulldogs hired Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead on November 28.
