Earthquake Strikes Delaware, No Damage Reported In Maryland


BREAKING: @USGS revises DE natural disaster again down to 4.1 Magnitude.

There have been no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The epicenter of the 4:47 p.m. tremor was 8 miles deep, below the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge.

The latest quake was downgraded to a magnitude 4.1 after data came in from several monitoring stations, U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Rafael Abreu said by telephone.

The quake was first reported with a magnitude of 4.4 and eventually downgraded to a 4.1, which could be felt throughout the capital of DE with reported tremors in Baltimore, Philadelphia and even as far as NY. The last time Philadelphia felt anything similar to this was 2011, when a 5.9 natural disaster hit Virginia, causing broken windows and other minor destruction.

The quake jolted the downtown area of the state capital, Dover, sending a handful of lawmakers and workers in the statehouse outdoors to see what happened as area residents gathered for the city's annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony a couple of blocks away. He said the quake was widely felt around the Mid-Atlantic region.

Initial reports stated the quake was a 5.1 magnitude, but has since been downgraded to a 4.4. Officers were sent to check the homes, she said. It was hard to immediately predict if there would be aftershocks, she said.
