Disney's Live-Action 'Mulan' Casts Liu Yifei in Title Role


Understood in China as a model and vocalist, the 30-year-old Yifei has showed up in "The Forbidden Kingdom" with Jackie Chan and "Pariah" with Nicolas Cage.

Liu, who is also known by the name of Crystal Liu, was chosen after a massive search by the movie house to find an actress who could portray the young woman, and for an actress who possesses the necessary skills to shine in a film with plenty of action. She rose to fame in China thanks to successful TV roles over the past decade, earning the nickname "Fairy Sister".

Actress Liu Yifei, who arrived at the red carpet of the 7th Beijing International Film Festival on April 16, 2017 in Beijing, China, has been cast as Mulan in the new Disney film. Her film credits include 2012's The Assassins, Ip Man 3, and fantasy drama Once Upon a Time. As such, we're combing over every piece of news about the production with especial focus, the latest being the casting of Liu Yifei as the title character. Though a longstanding highlight of American animation, Walt Disney's line of princess movies haven't always been what you'd call forward-thinking. Niki Caro (The Zookeeper's Wife) will direct the film, and Chris Bender (The Hangover), Jason Reed (Alice in Wonderland) and Jake Weiner (Leap Year) will executive produce. Just recently, Liu starred opposite Emile Hirsch in the romantic period piece directed by Bille August, The Chinese Widow.Chinese fans have been rooting for the young actress, even creating videos showing her capability in English, horse riding, and martial arts - all the necessities to portray Hua Mulan, a courageous woman who disguised herself as a man to take her father's army conscription in fifth-century China.
