The i8 roadster features a fabric soft top that can open or close in less than 16 seconds, at speeds up to 31 miles per hour. (320 Nm) of torque as the existing unit, with drive channeled through a 6-speed automatic gearbox to the rear wheels.
The biggest upgrade to the powertrain is a new 11.6 kWh battery pack up from the 7 kWh battery pack of the original BMW i8 and a slightly more powerful motor (12 more hp). Both the 2019 BMW i8 Roadster and Coupe will be go on sale in the spring. The i8's battery improvements bring its combined output to 369 hp and 420 lb-ft.
While the coupe can seat four people in a pinch, the roadster is purely a two-seat proposition.
A new E-Copper finish has been added, as has a Donington Grey metallic for both the Coupe and the Roadster.
Options on both models include head-up display, laser high beam system, and an acoustic pedestrian warning system, which operates at speeds up to 30km/h when the vehicle is operating in electric-only mode. Neither is the acceleration, though the 0-60 miles per hour times now stand at 4.2 seconds for the Coupe and 4.4 seconds for the roadster; 155 miles per hour remains the limited top speed.
In addition, BMW used carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) to build the windscreen frame. Also aiding rigidity on the Roadster are additional panels in the suspension and special front and rear struts.

The unladen weight of the i8 Roadster stands at 3513 lbs., making it some 132 lbs. heavier than the Coupe.
When the roof is opened, the i8 Roadster's rear window rises by 1.9 inches into what BMW calls a "comfort" position to reduce wind turbulence.
While the 2019 i8 Coupe keeps its 2+2 configuration, the new BMW i8 Roadster is a 2-seater, meant for the enjoyment of its driver and one lucky passenger.
Of course you're going to need to make sure you're making some serious cash to afford either version of the i8 with a street price expected to be north of $150,000.
Both can be ordered with Tera World Copper interior trim, which is new to the i8, and features a cloth and leather upholstery combination in a two-tone (Amido/E-Copper) colour scheme.
The cabin has been updated similar to the i8 Coupe.
