A tourist ferry capsized near the Pavithra Sangamam in Ibrahimpatnam on Sunday. "It capsized near a curve as it approached the Pavitra Sangamam point and most of the people were trapped underneath and were killed", an Assistant Commissioner of Police said. The boat with around 38 persons was heading to the Pavitra Sangamam Ferry ghat near Ibrahimpatnam.
More than 16 people were killed when the boat in which they were travelling capsized at Pavithra Sanghamam near Vijayawada.
Two persons, who were rescued from the tragedy, complained of sickness and were shifted to a government general hospital in Vijayawada, the officials said.

The deputy chief minister rushed to the accident spot to oversee the rescue operations and has directed police to rush additional force to help locate the missing persons. Local media reports suggested the boat was overloaded with passengers and the buoyancy of water changed leading to the disaster.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed his grief over the incident, and asked the District Collector and police authorities to take the necessary action.
"According to preliminary investigation, the private agency which was operating the boat did not have a licence from the tourism department", he said.
