Blizzard is making StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty free-to-play

This includes the campaign for the initial game in the Starcraft 2-saga, Wings of Liberty, as well as the campaign for its sequel Heart of the Swarm if players already own a copy of Wings of Liberty. The co-op mode, Co-Op Commanders, will also be playable for free. Co-op mode will be immediately accessible, though only Raynor, Kerrigan, and Artanis will be unlocked for free; all the other commanders will still require purchases to upgrade past level 5.

Players will be able to download the Starcraft 2 multiplayer, and the single-player campaign of Wings of Liberty for free starting November 14.

StarCraft 2 itself is a sci-fi space opera about three warring races facing an intergalactic threat, played as a real-time strategy game.

While some free-to-play games take a looser approach to the term by making the game free to download but essential content available through microtransactions, Blizzard seems to be avoiding that heavily criticized structure.

Ranked multiplayer is unlocked by getting 10 First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus A.I. play. If you have purchased all three campaigns as of October 31, Blizzard will be sending you an exclusive Ghost skin and three new portraits, as a thank you.

StarCraft is, by most accounts, the granddaddy of esports. Users just need to log-in to between November 8 and December 8 to claim it. Already own Wings of Liberty? The multiplayer mode will enable gamers from around the world to compete against each other.

Those wanting to experience more of the game, can do so by purchasing additional single-player campaigns, Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void, and Nova Covert Ops, individually ($14.99 United States dollars each) or together in the Campaign Collection ($39.99) through the online Blizzard Shop. Previous to the upcoming patch the free version of SCII, called Starter Edition, was limited to the Terran faction only and with a small selection of multiplayer maps. It will preserve the quality of the game as they said, "preserve the quality and integrity of the ranked experience" in a statement.
