The police have said Sherin was small for her age and it wasn't unusual for her to eat in the middle of the night to gain weight.

That evening, Mathews was arrested and charged with abandoning or endangering a child, "as a result of his decision to place her outside a place of safety", Richardson police posted to Facebook. Five hours after Sherin disappeared, he called police.

Wesley Mathews is in custody charged with Injury to a Child. Then, on October 22, detectives found Sherin's remains in the nearby culvert.

Perlich previously said police believe Sini Mathews was unaware of her husband's alleged punishment of the girl and that she was asleep at the time.

Mathews previously was charged with suspected child endangerment after telling police that he punished the child for not drinking her milk by making her stand next to a tree by an alley near their home.

Sini has not told police what had happened, according to the newspaper.

He was out on bail and made to wear an electronic monitor on his ankle after that arrest when he returned to police with the new version and was rearrested on the new charge of injuring a child.

Another neighbour Barabara Diamond Johnson asked why did not Wesley wake his nurse wife as Sherin choked to death, especially when she is a registered nurse at Children's hospital Dallas. "She was coughing and her breathing slowed".

Television station WFAA reported that a vigil was held for Sherin at the spot where her body was found on Sunday. Mathews and his wife Sini had adopted Sherin two years ago from an orphanage in Bihar. The Nalanda district police superintendent Sudheer Kumar Porikha said that in most case, the authorities were not informed when kids were adopted from child care centers.

Sherin, who had developmental issues and limited verbal communication skills, was confirmed dead by the United States police Tuesday after over two weeks of investigation.

The Mathews' had adopted Sherin in June 2016 after she was abandoned in her native country of India, the Dallas News reported.

The father of a 3-year-old Texas girl originally reported missing and later found dead was silent as officers escorted him into the Dallas County Jail. Investigators have asked neighbors and area businesses to check their video surveillance cameras for footage of a maroon Acura SUV owned by the Mathews family that they believe left the home between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. on October 7.
