Red Wings Trade Riley Sheahan To Penguins For Scott Wilson

TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reported talks between the Penguins and Red Wings have picked up and a deal could be on the horizon.

All these moves were made to give the Red Wings enough cap space to officially sign Athansiou.

Andreas Athanasiou and the Detroit Red Wings have agreed to a 1-year contract.

Athanasiou had until December 1 to sign with a club, the Red Wings leaving at least some time to spare. Puempel most likely will go straight to the Griffins while Wilson most likely will stay with the Red Wings. At this point in his development, he has the potential to take the next step and have a breakout season - that wasn't going to happen while he was skating in Switzerland by himself, looking for a contract from a Swiss team.

According to CapFriendly, the Red Wings have $0 in cap space with 22 players on their 23-man roster. He has 98 career points (38 goals and 60 assists) in 292 games with the Red Wings.

Riley Sheahan struggled mightily a year ago but being one of the younger players on the Red Wings still had a some trade value.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded Scott Wilson and a 3rd round to the Detroit Red Wings for Riley Sheahan and a 5th round pick. In 20 playoff games, Wilson had three goals and three assists. The question is how bad were the bridges burned between both sides during this holdout. "This thing is either going to get done here in the next day or so, or it's likely he's going to sign to play in Europe and who knows when or if he'll be back in the Red Wing lineup".
