India rout Pakistan 4-0, face Malaysia in Asia Cup hockey final

India was on top of their game and took the lead in the 39th minute of the game when Satbir Singh scored the opening goal for the men in blue.

India defeated Pakistan in the all-important semi-final match of Asia Cup on Saturday.

The second goal for Team India came in the 51st minute when Harmanpreet Singh converted the penalty corner with power, making no mistake to give a 2-0 lead over their arch-rivals.

Barring the 1-1 draw against Korea in its first Super 4 match, India has been in red hot form in the tournament. Pakistan and South Korea will face-off in the bronze medal match on Sunday.

Second-placed Malaysia (three points) and third-placed South Korea (two points) will vie for the other final spot. However, in the Super 4s stage, Pakistan started the match on the attack as they won three penalty corners inside the first quarter but could not convert any as the Indian defence was up to the task.

India are atop the table in Super 4 stage with four points from a win and a draw, followed by Malaysia (3 points), Korea (2 points) and Pakistan (1) from two games each.

In their last face-off, India won 3-1 against Pakistan.

After a quiet third quarter, Gurjant extended India's lead from close range when he was set up by Uthappa, Lalit and Akashdeep's combined play in the right flank.

With three matches remaining, Malaysia needs to finish among the top two teams in the group to qualify for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, scheduled to be held in the United Arab Emirates in 2019 from January 5 to February 1.

The tempo of the match increased towards the end of the first quarter but the second quarter saw both the teams battle it out in the midfield.

India started the fourth quarter aggressively as Varun Kumar missed a chance to score when Gurjant Singh found him in the circle with a calculated pass in the 46th minute.
