SPOKANE COUNTY, WA - Law enforcement are responding to a shots fired call at Freeman High School.

Gunfire erupted at Freeman High School in Rockford in Washington this morning as frantic teachers moved students to safety at a nearby primary school.

Spokane schools were placed on lockdown with students later being evacuated from the school, with parents gathering to try and get information.

One person was killed, and three others injured, in a shooting at a high school south of Spokane, Washington, officials said Wednesday.

A shooting has been reported at a high school in the Spokane Valley. "You never think about something happening like this at a small school".

At least five ambulances and a LifeFlight helicopter were sent to the scene, the newspaper reported. The lockdown has now been lifted, the school system tweeted.

"It's been fantastic, within probably 15-20 minutes of hearing about it, I'd already received a phone call, I'd already received a text message saying that their school is OK", she said.

She still anxious for others she knew, including a co-worker who had yet to hear from her son, a sophomore at Freeman.

The United States has had an average of 52 school shooting incidents a year since a gunman killed 26 young children and educators in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun-control group founded in response to that massacre.
