A Christmas Story is coming to television


Saturday Night Live veteran Maya Rudolph will star as Ralphie's mother in Fox's live musical version of A Christmas Story, TVLine has learned.

The three-hour live event will air Sunday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. ET on Fox. However, as more casting announcements are released, hopefully A Christmas Story's creative team will deem it necessary to give Rudoplh's character a full name. A Christmas Story will be FOX's second live telecast after Grease: Live, but is just the latest in the trend of live TV musicals, with NBC pioneering the phenomenon with musicals of The Sound of Music, Peter Pan Live, and The Wiz Live. The musical takes place in 1940s in and centers on a child named Ralphie, who wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas.

Rudolph will star as Ralphie's mom, the role originated by Melinda Dillon in the beloved A Christmas Story film from 1983.

Produced by Warner Horizon Unscripted Television & Alternative Television, it will be filmed at Warner Bros. They will compose several new songs for Fox's live version, with Jonathan Tolins and Robert Cary adapting the book. He is also an Academy Award-nominated producer, most recently for director Damien Chazelle's "La La Land" and Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies".
