Ford Mustang GT hits 60 miles per hour in under 4 seconds

It's also the fastest Ford Mustang GT ever.

The new Mustang GT will also be available with "custom-designed" Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S when buyers choose the Performance package.

"Typically, when you shift gears, you give up time", said Carl Widmann, Mustang's chief engineer. Together, and when set in "drag strip" mode-one of five driver-selectable modes available for 2018-the GT can hit that 0-60 in under four seconds milestone. What's unique is how this quarter-mile mode manages the new 10-speed automatic transmission for optimum straight-line acceleration. Ford announced today that the extra output and 10-speed transmission pair with a new Drag Strip mode to dip the Mustang GT's 60-mph time to the sub-4-second range, which Ford says is faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera. We don't have many details yet, but this mode is said to enhance off-the-line performance and to minimize the loss of engine torque between shifts.

The 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder has also been upgraded and now generates 310 horsepower and 350 lb. -ft. of torque - a 30 lb. -ft. gain over the current model.

The new 10-speed features direct-acting hydraulic controls, and boasts a wider ratio spread than the outgoing 6-speed with optimized spacing. As for the new Drag-Strip mode, one of the five in total driving modes, Ford says that it has been created to provide maximum acceleration and performance on a straight line, "eliminating the lost time usually associated with automatic shifting". However, we'll have to wait and see how these improvements actually play out in the street, on the track and, yes, at the drag strip.

Building out options and pricing for the new Mustang is going live on Ford's website starting tomorrow, and the auto will be available in showrooms starting this fall.
