Wimbledon Day 13 | Murray and Hingis take the Mixed title

Jamie Murray ensured there was one member of the family on the honours board at Wimbledon this year and was delighted he responded to a texted plea from Martina Hingis.

Hingis and Murray won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title on Sunday, beating Henri Kontinen and Heather Watson 6-4, 6-4 on Centre Court.

"I mean, the (men's) doubles for me is obviously my biggest goal of the year", Murray said. "It's going to take something pretty special to kind of maybe, potentially take my eye off the ball with it".

The duo had both previously won the title playing with different partners, Murray with Jelena Jankovic in 2007 and Hingis with Leander Paes in 2015.

Hingis's latest Wimbledon triumph came 20 years after her first, when she beat Jana Novotna at the age of 16 to become the youngest singles champion at the grand slam.

Murray and Hingis will start the final as favourites but there will be at least one set of British hands on the trophy come Sunday evening no matter what, a prospect Watson says she is relishing.

"But because it's far away, because of what happened a year ago, I just like to take the opportunity to thank the people in the very moment, and make them understand, yes, I hope that I'm back".

Murray and Hingis saved three break points in the 10th game of the second before converting their first match point. But she's won everything, won so many mixed as well. They earned five break points in the set but Watson couldn't capitalize, often being flummoxed by the Scot's swinging left-handed delivery.

"It's great that two Brits are in the final, but it doesn't really make any difference", Watson said.

The 25-year-old Channel Islander reflected afterwards on her first ever loss with Kontinen.

Watson said: "I think that I missed a few too many returns today". Ms Martin, a keen club player, said: "I really like her, and the way she plays with Henri". Murray and Hingis have yet to discuss future plans but it seems likely they will defend their title next summer and they may even play together in the US Open later this summer.
