As Exports Grow, China Defends Trade With Sanctions-Hit North Korea

North Korea's multiple missile tests in recent months, culminating with its first-ever successful launch last week of an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching Alaska, has alarmed the worldwide community and presented Trump's first major foreign policy test.

North Korea is under global sanctions for its development of nuclear weapons, but Kim Jong Un may still have access to luxury items for himself and officials who stay loyal to the leadership.

The North's foreign ministry said in a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency that the ICBM test was an exercise of its legitimate right to self-defense against nuclear threat from the United States.

"It would be a fatal mistake to think that as a nuclear power the DPRK, which possesses an ICBM, will tolerate the reckless sanctions blackmail of the United States and other hostile forces", according to the report.

In response to the launch, our ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, called for an emergency meeting of the Security Council whose permanent members include China and Russian Federation, either of whom could veto any action we proposed.

"About one-third of North Koreans are naïve and believe that North Korea can defeat the US with its nuclear and missile programs", he said.

Two-way trade between China and North Korea rose 10.5 percent to $2.55 billion in the first half of 2017, according to data released by the Chinese government on Thursday.

China says it has to act with caution because they don't want a flood of refugees across its shared border.

Pyongyang claimed the July 4 launch was particularly significant because it represented the first launch of a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

Senior US officials say that a new round of sanctions related to North Korea is imminent.

The report, based on thermal images from September through June, comes amid rising tensions over North Korea's disputed nuclear program. DPRK state-media called the missile the Hwasong-14 and claimed it could strike the USA mainland. For example, in 2013, the committee authorized long-range radar systems to improve our ability to track and intercept North Korea's missiles.

"A favorable response from North Korea can not be expected", the newspaper stated on Tuesday. This was the period between the US agreement with North Korea and the start of the U.S.

Officials say that for the time being the banks targeted are only going to be smaller ones, as well as some other private businesses the U.S. believes might be North Korean "shell companies".

Fox News notes that North Korean workers have helped Russian Federation construct a soccer stadium in St. Petersburg, and helped build a luxury apartment complex in Moscow. Almost two-thirds of Americans (64%) say the USA should use military force to defend its allies in Asia in the event that they get into a serious military conflict with North Korea.

As the matter came before the UNSC and after talking to US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley, Mr Trump tweeted: "Trade between China and North Korea grew nearly 40 per cent in the first quarter".

What to do about North Korea? An online article in the official People's Daily this week accused the United States and Japan of using the "China responsibility theory" to hide their own failure on the Korean Peninsula. It took 56 days to adopt UNSC Resolution 2270, regarded as the strongest non-military sanctions in the history of the United Nations, in response to the fourth nuclear test.
