Manchester United Manager Jose Mourinho held his first news conference of the summer yesterday at UCLA, where the team is now training for their summer exhibition tour.

"I don't like to speak about players who aren't ours, because Morata is not our player", the United boss said.

The west London side were thought to be closing in on a deal to sign Romelu Lukaku before the Everton striker completed a surprise £75m switch to Manchester United.

"Now that the Manchester United thing has died down which was held up because Madrid deliberately left United at arm's length because they did not know if Cristiano Ronaldo was going to carry out his threat and leave".

"I don't like to speak about players who aren't ours, because Morata is not our player". It is obvious, it is public and we have not reached an economic agreement.

Don Balon, as quoted by the Daily Express, is reporting that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is unwilling to match Real Madrid's asking price. Nor one from Real Madrid, ' Mourinho told reporters in LA.

While United missed out on Morata, the club snapped up Lukaku and made the striker the second most expensive transfer in British football history, behind only Paul Pogba.

The Red Devils boss admitted for the first time out here in Los Angeles that he did try to buy the Real Madrid striker.

Speaking to Talksport, the former Chelsea defender said: "I think Rashford, actually, is better than Lukaku". Obviously there are other good strikers in football but the Premier League is a very specific habitat, a different habitat.

"We have players that belong to the squad but can not play for the next few months; Marcus Rojo, Ashley Young, Luke Shaw, Zlatan if he stays so we still need two more players I would say, at least one".
