Macron, Trump engage in a handshake 'duel'

President Donald Trump watched US and French soldiers march together through the Paris sunshine on Friday in a double celebration marking 100 years since the United States entered World War One and France's annual Bastille Day holiday.

Still, Macron extended an invitation to Trump to join the national day celebrations, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the US entry into World War I. And the meetings on Thursday have been billed by both governments as a time to deepen the ties that bind the USA and France.

"Mr. Trump's presence at my side is a sign of an enduring friendship and I want to thank him", Macron said in a speech afterwards.

Also in the parade were French soldiers taking part in the mission against the Islamic State group. "Congratulations President @EmmanuelMacron!" he added.

But the day was tinged with mourning, coming a year on from a jihadist massacre that claimed 86 lives in the southern city of Nice, where Macron led remembrances after the Paris ceremonies.

Macron, 39, rolled out the red carpet for Trump's two-day visit, hoping to improve relations and persuade the USA president to change his mind about withdrawing from the global Paris agreement on climate change.

Trump wore a red suit from French designer Christian Dior for her arrival in Paris the day previous.

As Trump and USA first lady Melania Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte, he apparently couldn't help but remark on her figure.

"We are fighting to destroy the terrorist organisations that threaten all civilised peoples and that continue to exact a awful toll on the French people, including one year ago today", Trump s statement said.

It was just one way in which Macron rolled out France's red carpet for Trump, following the same program laid out by Saudi Arabia during Trump's first foreign trip as president, in late May. Her response was unclear.

Lyn Brown, MP for West Ham, tweeted: 'Creepy, totally inappropriate and sexist.' Another user said: 'That was truly creepy.

"You're in such great shape...beautiful", Trump was overheard saying during a meeting with the Macrons. "Its gross, and deeply inappropriate".

Donald Trump may enjoy a parade as much as anyone else, but behind the marching bands in Paris was the drumbeat of the alleged Russian collusion scandal that continues to dog his presidency.

Asked whether their dinner on Thursday night at the tony Le Jules Verne at the Eiffel Tower would be a "dinner between friends", both said yes.

Brigitte is 25 years her husband's senior and is his former high school teacher. He is the country's youngest leader since Napoleon two centuries ago.

So, I'm sorry if you're creeped out all over again watching any of this, but I'm glad to not yet be desensitized to having a president who talks about and interacts with women like they've been brought before him for his expert appraisal.

"It seems that Macron sees it as his personal task to get Trump back on board".

TRUMP: Something could happen with respect to the Paris accord.

Macron has vowed to end the state of emergency by November 1 this year.

Macron and Trump were scheduled to hold talks lasting an hour and a half before dining with their wives at a restaurant on the second floor of the Eiffel Tower. After a handful of hand very troublesome upon his arrival on the scene, the 45th u.s. president could not help but have a word with Brigitte Macron.
