Brittany Lang needs better to defend in US Women's Open

Not for Shanshan Feng, though. She didn't get much in the way of sleep as she travelled here overnight, arriving during the day Monday. She also shot 6-under par 66 to take the first-round lead.

"I would say the traveling is getting tougher for sure", said Feng, "to adjust to the jet lag". "Golf is just part of our lives". It takes a lot of stress off when you know you can just tap them in.

So far the White House has not said anything about President Trump attending the US Women's Open this weekend and neither has the U.S. Golf Association.

Wie, who fired a one-over par 73 in Thursday's opening round at Trump National, began at the par-4 10th with a bogey then withdrew, citing a nagging neck injury.

The 27-year-old Wie, who won the 2014 US Women's Open, has battled injury issues throughout her career, which started when she became the youngest player to qualify for a USGA amateur championship at age 10.

"It's good to be able to play alongside her so I can feed off her and I think we had a couple of holes where the whole group birdied and it's nice when you can get into that momentum", Ko said.

"It was my sponsor's tournament in China last week and I felt like it was my responsibility to actually go support my sponsor", Feng said about playing in the Kumho Tire Ladies Open.

Even though Ko is in contention heading into Friday, she did give two shots back with bogeys on Nos. She and 38 others will return to the course Friday morning to resume play before beginning the second round.

If one word describes Feng, it is "adaptable".

Even Lang believes she has a shot. Thursday, she used a new putter that, outside of a few inches here and there, produced the desired results.

Life and seven tour victories have put her in a long-term good mood.

Then, she shared her love affair for American food. "I love steak, maybe buffalo wings", she said. "But, you know, this is my sixth Open and no matter how times you're playing I think you always get excited and a little bit of the butterflies on the first tee, and I think this is the biggest major championship". Capturing the bronze medal inspired Feng to play more aggressively. "Putting", she said simply when asked the key to her 67.

"The cow outfit has become one of my signature so when I'm wearing the cow trousers, people recognize me more".

Starting on the back alongside Lydia Ko and Inbee Park, Feng surged up the leaderboard with a hat-trick of birdies from the 11th and added three more consecutive gains around the turn.
