The first of Burnell's "Stephanie Patrick" series of novels, "The Rhythm Section" follows the titular heroine, who is on a path of self-destruction after the death of her family in an airplane crash - a flight that she was meant to be on. Lively plays Stephanie Patrick, who becomes a hitwoman after a plane carrying her entire family is blown out of the sky.

She then discovers it was not an accident and was caused by a bomb onboard, and turns into a deadly assassin, determined to take revenge on the people responsible.

The movie will be filmed in the UK, Ireland, Spain, Switzerland and the U.S., and will be directed by Reed Morano, whose credits include the adaptation of Margaret Atwood's book The Handmaid's Tale.

Yeah, I'm having kind of a hard time imagining Blake Lively going this dark with a role, but it'll definitely be interesting to see how she handles it! Lively is also repped by Management 360.

The current plan is to start shooting this autumn in the US, UK, Ireland, Spain, and Switzerland. IM Global and WME Global are handling the worldwide rights.

IM Global founder Stuart Ford added, "In Stephanie Patrick, Mark has created a unique female heroine who turns so numerous current cinematic clichés surrounding so-called "kickass" female leads on their head".

Broccoli and Wilson comment, "We are thrilled to be bringing Mark Burnell's "The Rhythm Section" to the big screen with our partners at IM Global". In June of 2017, Morano was presented with the Distinguished Vanguard Filmmaker Award at the UCLA Directors Spotlight. She is set to star in an adaptation of Liane Moriarty's novel The Husband's Secret from CBS Films. They have tapped both Blake Lively to star in the female-driven espionage thriller and The Handmaid's Tale director Reed Morano to helm.
