Snap Introduces Snap Map, A Location-Sharing Feature For Friends

Snapchat has added a new map feature that allows people to see your location - and parents are being warned about it.

Here's what you do.

Snapchat says the Snap Map only updates when you open Snapchat.

You can tap on any friend on the map to start a chat or see when their location was last updated. The legal version of this news story can be viewed at Users can enable a "Ghost Mode", making them disappear from the map, but still allowing them to see others' locations.

If you want to disable Snap Map, select "Ghost Mode" upon Snapchat's initial walkthrough. The Snap Map is a new layer on top of the current Snapchat experience. "We suggest parents check their child's phone to ensure that the location services is disabled or that the app is set to 'ghost mode'". "I understand if you're at an event and checking in, but I wouldn't want people to see where I am at all times".

You do not have to share your location because you are using the app or because the rest of your friends on Snapchat are sharing their location.

So if they just happen to be at the coffee shop they used to take you on hungover Saturday mornings, well, they're probably thinking of you, right? This done by Snapchat itself based on what time, day and location.

Snap Map's release comes after Snapchat's acquisition of social mapping startup Zenly. I rattled off three house numbers on the street closest to where her Bitmoji appeared on Snap Map.

They have designed a step-by-step guide on how to use the map.

Snapchat hit us all with an enormous new update yesterday and that was Snap Map.

There is an ActionMoji button which shows what each of the friends is now doing at the location. If an emergency arises, being able to just drop a pin on your location and give it to those who might need it is awesome, and much better than having to find an address and type it in, or try to give directions in a text message. And you can search for friends by using the search tool and writing in the name of the person you're looking for. According to TechCrunch, Snapchat bought Zenly for between $250 million and $350 million in a deal that closed late May. There you can see ActionMoji of your friends on the map.

The location feature is "opt-in", which means that location sharing is switched off by default but can be turned on by the user.
