The entire stadium came together to honor Scalise and the Capital Police officers present who prevented the shooting from being much worse.

Scalise was among five people wounded when a shooter sprayed rifle fire at congressional Republicans practicing on a diamond in suburban Alexandria, Va.

President Donald Trump on Friday said that Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), who is in critical condition after a gunman attacked a Republican congressional baseball team practice Wednesday, "took a bullet for all of us".

Sava declined to put a timeline on when that would happen or when Scalise, 51, would be able to leave the hospital.

The bullet that had hit Scalise was a single rifle round that "travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding".

Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone. Scalise remains in critical condition but his vital signs have stabilized and doctors have lifted sedation enough for him to respond to family members.

It was Wednesday morning when Scalise joined other congressmen at a congressional baseball practice for the annual game held Thursday. Once it has lodged in bone or muscle, "it's not going to do anything". He was said to have been awake on scene; however, underwent shock during his transportation to the trauma center.

If Scalise did not suffer nerve damage and his recovery continues without any complications, "it is possible that within three months or so, he can.be back on his feet", said Dr. Alex Jahangir, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, who was not involved in Scalise's care.

Doctors say House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (skuh-LEES') has a good possibility of recovery after he was at "imminent risk of death" from a gunshot wound to the hip two days ago. "The congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

"There is more risk involved in removing them". Then, Trump said "Let's play ball!" But he stopped short of providing specifics of Scalise's internal injuries.

"So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you", Trump added.

Scalise's wife, Jennifer, issued a statement saying she was thankful for the "incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes" the family has received since the shooting.

Hodgkinson contacted both of his state's Democratic senators frequently, always through email links on their websites, spokesmen said Friday.

Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's. Griner is still hospitalized at MedStar and "in good spirits", Sava said.
