Djokovic, Muguruza start title defenses at French Open

Australian Nick Kyrgios shrugged off injury concerns and kept his emotions in check to outclass Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 on Tuesday and book his spot in the second round of the French Open.

- The 22-year-old will face either Tunisia's Malek Jaziri or South African Kevin Anderson in the second round.

- The match was del Potro's first at Roland Garros since 2012, when he lost in the quarter-final to Roger Federer.

Although Muguruza's first-strike tennis proved too much for the 36-year-old Italian as she beat her 6-2, 6-4, the Spaniard was full of admiration afterwards.

Paire led the second set 4-3 while breaking Nadal's serve twice in a row and banking on a largely local crowd who voiced their support for the temperamental World No 45.

Sloppy mistakes blighted the Serbian's first game under the tutelage of Andre Agassi, Djokovic racking up 29 unforced errors while only converting eight of his 20 break chances. The French Open tennis tounament starts Sunday. But don't expect Wawrinka to jump for joy if he crosses paths with Agassi in Paris. "I know how to do this really", Nadal said. There was quite a bit of that against Boserup, who was making her debut in the French Open's main draw.

Jack Sock of the USA returns the ball to Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic during their first round match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium, Monday, May 29, 2017 in Paris.

Back on the court where he completed his career Grand Slam, Novak Djokovic showed no sign of the crisis of confidence that has affected his game since winning Roland Garros past year.

Since then, though, the highlight for Djokovic was a runner-up finish at the U.S. Open.

Two of the four seeded USA women in the French Open have lost their first-round matches. "And in the third set when I had him on the ropes, I played very bad games on my serve".

The match, which was briefly interrupted by rain, lasted 1 hour, 14 minutes before Kvitova sealed it when Boserup hit the ball into the net. This year it seems more open to players outside the top tier since the top two ranked players in the world haven't been playing like their ranking would suggest.

"You start a tournament from the same line with everyone else". The 11th-seeded Bulgarian, who was once regarded as a potential future No. 1, has never fared well at the French Open. So is two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova's comeback.

The fourth seed arrives in Paris with three clay-court titles to his name this season - winning both Monte Carlo and Barcelona for a 10th time, while securing a fifth Madrid Masters crown.

Kvitova had not played in a tournament since she was stabbed during an attack at her home in the Czech Republic in December. The No. 13 seed struggled to hold back the tears after clinching the victory on the second of her three match points.

The 2016 women's champ, Garbine Muguruza, will also be in action, facing 2010 French Open victor Francesca Schiavone.
