To many Americans, Memorial Day has lost its meaning

Will you take time, even a moment, to observe Memorial Day today ... to be thankful?

The caretakers at national cemeteries don't take long weekends, because by law those cemeteries can't close for more than 48 hours at a time. It's a day many of us will celebrate with a trip to the lake, the golf course or the pool or by cooking out with friends and family.

The ultimate sacrifice made by soldiers who have fallen while serving our country should be honored in perpetuity.

Chicago held many of its Memorial Day ceremonies over the weekend so the suburbs are holding there's today.
