Senate Intelligence Committee leaders demand Comey's notes

The Times report may present the clearest evidence yet that the president has tried to influence government investigations into links between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Vladimir Putin Willing To Release Transcript Of Meeting With Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

"My view is that there are a lot of pieces coming together", said Peter Zeidenberg, a former public corruption prosecutor.

May 16, 2017: A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Comey wrote in a memo after a January 27 dinner with the president that Trump had asked him to shut down the FBI investigation into Flynn.

Striking a defiant stance, he added: "You can't let the critics and the naysayers get in the way of your dreams". But other legal experts said investigators would consider a series of interactions among the president, the FBI and the Justice Department about the Flynn investigation and a broader counterintelligence probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Trump came under strong fire following revelations that he revealed intelligence secrets, which were obtained from an ally, when he met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak at the White House last week.

Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader of the Senate, said simply, "It would be helpful to have less drama emanating from the White House". The request came the day after a report that President Donald Trump asked Comey to drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn's ties to Russian Federation and Turkey, per a memo Comey wrote after his February meeting with the president.

But members of congress have demanded access to all of Mr Comey's memos - he is known to be an assiduous note taker - relating to dealings with the president as part of their investigations. An official pointed out that the acting FBI director last week testified that there had been no effort to impede the investigation. According to John McCain, Trump's scandals are "reaching Watergate size and scale".

The White House vigorously denied it all.

"We are watching in real time an obstruction of justice case unfolding and the president of the United States has an obligation to be more forthcoming with any tapes, memos, memoranda, but in the meantime, there need to be subpoenas that will make sure all of this evidence is preserved and produced", Blumenthal said.

The person who described the Comey memo to the AP was not authorised to discuss it by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"Chairman Burr and I have sent out a request for Director Comey to testify before the Intelligence Committee both in closed and open", Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Mark Warner (D-Va.) told reporters Wednesday afternoon.

The frantic activity in Congress showed signs that more Republicans were starting to show serious concern about Trump's actions following the Comey memo bombshell.

When asked about the issue, Representative Justin Amash, of MI, said interfering in an FBI investigation into Mr Flynn could be the basis of such a case "if the allegations are true". He is a good guy.
