Qualcomm Tests Dynamic Charging System On Renault Kangoo

Imagine driving an electric vehicle and not having to worry about running low on battery.

In a five-minute video, director of engineering for Qualcomm New Zealand Mike Kissin explains how DEVC works, and what it would mean for the auto industry: "We are inventors, and that's what's enabled us to get where we are with wireless charging technology", said Kissin.

It is hoped the breakthrough in dynamic charging will make electric vehicles a far more attractive option for auto users.

Tortured abbreviation aside, the Qualcomm demonstration, in conjunction with Vedecom and Renault, pips perceived EV technology leader Tesla, in improving the prospects for zero emissions vehicles, by potentially relieving the range anxiety that makes electric-power mostly for short-trip urban travel. This dynamic charging demonstration is the embodiment of this.

The dynamic charging demonstrations took place at the 100-metre test track, built by Vedecom at Satory, Versailles, near Paris with Qualcomm and Vedecomm installing the system in the track and Vedecom and Renault installing the secondary part into the Kangoos. That's why Renault has teamed up with U.S. tech industry giant Qualcomm and French technology institute Vedecom to side-step the EV recharging stop altogether, creating an electric auto charging system which works on the move.

The video that Qualcomm put up for the public shows how, if this system works, will help you call a auto using your smartphone, pick you up, and then drop you at the destination autonomously.

Aside from simply charging the vehicle, the system is also planned to offer functions to identify and authorise cars entering the charging track, as well as detecting the alignment and speed of the charging auto.

Already partly funded by the European Union, the wireless charging project will continue testing until December before a feasibility study begins to address the technological and economic implications of rolling out the wireless charging on European roads. The group says its main goal is to "conduct feasibility analysis of wireless DEVC as a means of EV range extension". "I am immensely proud of what we have achieved".
