"Once an official statement regarding Nicky's condition is released by the hospital or Nicky's family, a further update from the team will be issued", Hayden's Red Bull Honda WSBK team said in a statement. The Red Bull Honda World Superbike rider, who is a keen cyclist, was struck by a vehicle near the Misano circuit.

He suffered head and chest injuries in the accident and has been placed in an induced coma, according to reports.

Italian great Valentino Rossi, who leads the championship and is racing in France this weekend, hailed his former team mate as "one of the best friends I have had in the paddock". "For Nicky, we're all with you", the Italian MotoGP legend added.

Hayden, nicknamed the "Kentucky Kid", won the 2006 MotoGP world title before moving to the Superbike World Championship for the 2016 season.

"After a few years we fought for the title down to the last race in Valencia and, unfortunately for me, he won and became MotoGP world champion".

Michele Scarponi, the 2011 Giro d'Italia cycling champion, was killed last month after being hit by a van while training close to his home in Filottrano in eastern Italy.
