The series, which stars Cress Williams in the lead role, centers on retired superhero Jefferson Pierce.

Of course, while the hero is away, the city's villains play, and things grow worse and worse.

In a trailer that seems to be inspired by the early days of Arrow and Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, Black Lightning appears to be a heck of a lot grittier than its CW counterparts.

The CW's DC Comics small screen maestro Greg Berlanti will team up with the husband-wife creative duo of Mara Brock Akil and husband Salim Akil to develop a Black Lightning TV show.

Following the announcement of a full season order for BLACK LIGHTNING, the CW network has released the first full trailer for the upcoming show.

Which is encouraging, because the two young women, in the comics, eventually become the heroes known as Thunder and Lightning. "He was hope personified, but he was also Jefferson Pierce, my father".

"We do not aim to do a five-way crossover", Pedowitz said. Black Lightning will also not be airing during the Fall schedule alongside Arrow, the Flash, Supergirl, or Legends of Tomorrow.

Pedowitz calls the show "a separate situation" from the networks' other series, something which is compounded by the fact that Black Lightning films in Atlanta while the rest of the shows film in Vancouver, making a crossover even more unlikely. He noted that part of the reason is logistics: Black Lightning films in Atlanta, while the other four shows shoot in Vancouver, Canada, making a crossover between the five stories logistically hard. "Our belief is that we will never have more than four DC shows [on] at a time, as far as that goes, so we'll always have a rotation of some sort". Pierce is hiding a secret: his ability to harness and control electricity, something which he used for years during his time as a vigilante. However, after too many nights with his life and his family on the line, he left his Super Hero days behind. Pierce is already an experienced crime fighter with a violent past.

Black Lightning is set to air in the United States this spring.
