Betts, Bradley go deep to lift Red Sox over Cardinals 6-3

Chris Young waited a long time for his opportunity Wednesday night and made the most of it.

The Cardinals staked Mike Leake to a 4-0 lead two innings into the game, jumping on Rick Porcello for five hits in the first two innings.

Dexter Fowler hit a leadoff homer for the Cardinals, who had won eight of 10. "I had a good first at-bat and then not really another good one after that. So I'm just trying to put it all together". The Red Sox have since finished in last place twice before reclaiming the AL East crown in 2016.

The homer also was the first run the Cardinals have allowed in the first inning in 21 home games this season.

Red Sox Manager John Farrell said right-hander Hector Velazquez will be called up from Class AAA to start Thursday at Oakland.

Their lineup won't be as good as it was past year, but there's no reason why it should be this bad.

Farrell pointed to how his club played a strong game in every phase, particularly defense, Tuesday. If they are to make it back to the postseason they'll need to improve significantly - especially on the offensive side of the ball.

(2/3 of an inning), Matt Barnes (1/3 of an inning), Joe Kelly (2/3 of an inning), Robbie Scott (1/3 of an inning), Craig Kimbrel (one inning), Heath Hembree (one inning) and finally Ben Taylor (one inning, save). With Rick Porcello set to face Mike Leake in the pitching matchup, the over/under now sits at 8 runs.

The Red Sox seemed out of the game most of the way, as it was 4-0 from the second inning all the way until the seventh when they scored two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to tie the game at four.

Leake gave up two runs in seven innings, while Porcello allowed four runs in six innings. "However it is I get on base, or whatever happens, happens". The fact of the matter is, through 39 games they've been nothing but underwhelming.

A leadoff walk in the fifth was followed by an error charged to Jedd Gyorko on a hard-hit ball, and a swinging bunt by Rodriguez advanced the runners to second and third. He walked Dustin Pedroia with one out.

"I just feel like I'm not really consistent yet", Betts said. "When you have second and third and the infield back and you give up a run that's hard to swallow". Moreland led off the seventh inning with an infield single and took second on a throwing error by shortstop Aledmys Diaz.

Mookie Betts hasn't felt great about his performances lately, even if the results for the Boston Red Sox right fielder look just fine. We'll have to wait for the team to make a full evaluation of his status, but Holt may very well be back to square one once again. Yet, when you look at the condition of the rotation behind Sale, going after Quintana doesn't seem so insane.

The Red Sox haven't exactly played pretty baseball this season.

NOTES: After leaving his Sunday start because of tightness in his left triceps, Red Sox LHP Drew Pomeranz is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday.
