Jinder Mahal named #1 contender for the WWE Championship

She demands the be given a SmackDown Women's Championship match and the champion, Naomi, interrupts her. Naomi says she'll give Charlotte what she wants and she immediately takes the "Queen" down with a forearm.

Another future title match was also announced on tonight's show.

Charlotte counters Naomi's attempt at the Rear View and hits the champion with Natural Selection to pick up the win in her first SmackDown Live match.

Mahal won a number one contender's match on tonight's SmackDown to advance to Backlash, where he'll challenge for the title. Half of the men in this match (Jinder Mahal, Sami Zayn, and Erick Rowan) weren't on the roster just a few weeks ago.

Jinder Mahal won with the full nelson slam. The finish saw Mahal scoring the pin over Zayn. Mahal then cut a promo and said the crowd was booing him because he was not a stereotypical All-American: His family is wealthy, he's highly educated, and he speaks two languages. This guy can't win a low-card singles match and now he's No. 1 contender?

En route to his WWE Championship "house of horrors" match against Bray Wyatt at WWE Payback, Randy Orton battled Erick Rowan. Sure that would leave SmackDown without a Champion but with Kevin Owens and AJ Styles fighting over the U.S. title, that belt could be elevated to main event status.

After a heated segment last week, it appears that Dolph Ziggler and Shinsuke Nakamura are destined to meet inside the ring.

While the referee is getting Chad Gable back to the ring apron, Primo attacks Jason Jordan from the apron to help Epico get the pinfall. This was a non-title match. Owens obviously beat Gandy in under a minute, and Gandy blew the Pop-Up Powerbomb spot by jumping too early. Good back-and-forth action between the two included a powerful Deep Six by Corbin, but Styles was able to force the match outside the ring. These two worked well together, and I'm not going to hate another rematch likely coming next week. By defeating Baron Corbin and Sami Zayn in the main event last week, he's in line to face whoever the United States Champion is following Payback.
