A 9-year-old classmate who also was struck by gunfire is stable, in good spirits and watching cartoons at a hospital, Marsden said.

According to ABC 7, Jonathan Martinez was standing next to his teacher, Karen Smith, in her classroom at North Park Elementary school Monday morning when Smith's estranged husband, Cedric Anderson, entered the classroom and opened fire. Anderson died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A 9-year-old boy who was injured in the shooting is recovering at a hospital.

An 8-year-old boy shot and killed along with his teacher in a San Bernardino special-education classroom was born with a genetic condition and had survived heart surgery, a school official said Tuesday.

"I know him because one day he just walked up to me and said, 'Can we be friends?' and I said, 'Yeah, ' and we've been friends ever since", he told The Associated Press.

What made Anderson's character more complex is that he wasn't silent about his views on violence, especially when it came to the ideas of black men using violence to fight the police or when women were the perpetrators of assault.

There were 15 students in the special needs classroom ranging from first to fourth grade, along with two adult aides, Burguan said.

The ex-wife of a Navy veteran sought a restraining order against him after he threatened to kill her and her children and then take his own life years before he opened fire at a San Bernardino elementary school, killing his new wife and a student in a murder-suicide. "We think the two children were unfortunate recipients of injuries".

The conversations surrounding gun laws in this country tend to be rather cyclical: There are those who believe that there should be more restrictions since America has some of the most permissive gun laws of any industrialized nation, while others want the right to bear arms as promised by the Second Amendment. Burguan said 10 rounds were fired, with one reload as the gun holds six rounds.

Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said police served a search warrant at the Mt. Wasatch Drive house.

A school district spokeswoman said that the city's schools increased security measures after the 2015 terrorist attack.

“This is a rare occurrence in our schools, ” school district Superintendent Dale Marsden said. "Once the school bell rings, the only entry point into a campus is the main school office, where visitors have to sign in and receive a visitor's pass". But outside the context of the shooting, nothing about the note would have been alarming, he said.

Ruben Gutierrez, the grandfather of Jonathan Martinez's friend Jeffrey Imbriani, said the shooting was "just beyond words". She knows when to ignore me.

There have been 220 school shootings in the United States since 2013, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, a group that tracks gun violence in the United States.

The attack comes a little more than a year after a mass shooting in San Bernardino left 14 people dead.

April 16, 2007, Virginia Tech, Virginia: Cho Seung Hui, 23, killed 32 students and faculty members before committing suicide. Educators should not have to fear being shot at work.
