Parent: Slain teacher's life was all about kids


A 9-year-old classmate who also was struck by gunfire is stable, in good spirits and watching cartoons at a hospital, Marsden said.

According to ABC 7, Jonathan Martinez was standing next to his teacher, Karen Smith, in her classroom at North Park Elementary school Monday morning when Smith's estranged husband, Cedric Anderson, entered the classroom and opened fire. Anderson died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A 9-year-old boy who was injured in the shooting is recovering at a hospital.

An 8-year-old boy shot and killed along with his teacher in a San Bernardino special-education classroom was born with a genetic condition and had survived heart surgery, a school official said Tuesday.

"I know him because one day he just walked up to me and said, 'Can we be friends?' and I said, 'Yeah, ' and we've been friends ever since", he told The Associated Press.

What made Anderson's character more complex is that he wasn't silent about his views on violence, especially when it came to the ideas of black men using violence to fight the police or when women were the perpetrators of assault.

There were 15 students in the special needs classroom ranging from first to fourth grade, along with two adult aides, Burguan said.

The ex-wife of a Navy veteran sought a restraining order against him after he threatened to kill her and her children and then take his own life years before he opened fire at a San Bernardino elementary school, killing his new wife and a student in a murder-suicide. "They've been separated for about the last month, month and a half, lately, when this incident took place", he said Monday. "I ask everyone to join me in keeping all the victims and those impacted in your prayers".

A school district spokeswoman said that the city's schools increased security measures after the 2015 terrorist attack.

“This is a rare occurrence in our schools, ” school district Superintendent Dale Marsden said. "Once the school bell rings, the only entry point into a campus is the main school office, where visitors have to sign in and receive a visitor's pass". But outside the context of the shooting, nothing about the note would have been alarming, he said.

Ruben Gutierrez, the grandfather of Jonathan Martinez's friend Jeffrey Imbriani, said the shooting was "just beyond words". She knows when to ignore me.

The attack comes a little more than a year after a mass shooting in San Bernardino left 14 people dead.
