Fate Of The Furious races to 100 million dollar opening

Universal reported an even $190 million, and factoring out online ticketing surcharges, the total comes to a slightly less-hefty RMB 1.245 billion ($182.2 million), but no matter how you slice it, Furious 8's debut - almost double North America's and more than a third of its worldwide cume - solidifies The Fast and the Furious as China's premiere franchise.

Fate of the Furious certainly spooked the competition; no other film opened against in nationwide. Fate of the Furious has one of the most inclusive group of actors in such a high-profile project and stars Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Tyrese Gibson and Michelle Rodriguez. The film's opening weekend haul includes $190 million earned in China, a record for a Hollywood film in that country.

The film broke the record for biggest worldwide weekend ever, with $432.3 million.

Before The Fate of the Furious was released, the series had already generated $3.9 billion globally, according to Box Office Mojo. F7 went on to gross RMB 2.426 billion ($391 million), and remains China's highest-grossing Hollywood film of all-time, but the new installment's historic opening bodes well for a run challenging RMB 3 billion ($435 million).

The previous opening records holder was Stephen Chow and Tsui Hark's domestic fantasy movie "Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back", which earned 356 million yuan on its premiere in January this year.

If those estimates hold when final numbers are tallied early Monday, Furious 8 will eclipse Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($529 million) to boast the biggest global opening of all time. The 8th installment of the Fast and the Furious franchise has raked in approximately 11.50 crores on Sunday and now stands with a grand total of 47.50 crores.

Universal's Fast and the Furious franchise is showing no signs of running out of gas on the world stage. "It's still firing on all cylinders".

The film collected huge amount from China.

Beauty and the Beast came in third place with $13.6 million and stands at $454.6 million domestically after 31 days.
